Update for February 19, 2007

Tyler has now been going to Push to Walk for 3 weeks.

His progress has been very encouraging.

His routine consists of stretching on the therapy platform, using a stationary bike, using the standing frame, using the floor mats and boxes and using the ballet bar for standing. This past Saturday he rode the stationary bike and was able to pedal by himself!. He is able to use his hips and his hamstring muscles to simulate the pedal motion. He also reports a lot more sensation in his legs. He has gone to 6 sessions in the last 2 weeks and he says that he has a lot of sore muscles from all the hard work.

Tyler’s Trainer, Eric, told him that his diagnosis as a complete paraplegic must be wrong because of all the muscle movement and sensations he has. A complete means no movement or feeling. Tyler has an appointment at Helen Hayes this month and they will be surprised to see his progress. Maybe they will change his diagnosis!

Tyler has a standing frame on order and can’t wait to get it. The frame will allow him to stand and do exercises with his legs. When he stands it helps his body regulate blood pressure and takes the pressure off his lower back from sitting all the time. As he gets stronger, we hope he will be able to stand up by himself!. We have been videoing a lot of the sessions so maybe we can get some of them up on this site so you can see what Tyler is doing. The staff at Push to Walk work him hard for 2 hours at a time and he is pretty tired by the end of the session. That’s all for now, but if you read this, please leave a message and give Tyler some extra encouragement.

Love Tyler, Keegan, Justin, Lori and Jay

Update for March 2, 2007

Tyler got his standing frame yesterday. It is a device that lifts him from a sitting position to standing up. From there he can do some arm/leg work with the built in glider. It allows him to move his arms back an forth and at the same time his opposite leg moves. There is a resistance setting to make it harder for a more intense workout. This device was purchased through the Tyler fund. Thank you to everyone for this device. The Doctors, Therapists and Push to Wlak fitness trainers all agree that standing up is one thing Tyler needs to do more of. It will help with his blood pressure, core strength, bone density and overall muscle tone.
Tyler continues to work hard at Push To Walk. They now have thier website up www.pushtowalkNJ.org. Check it out if you get a chance. There might be pictures of Tyler showing up there!
Last week, Connor and Tim were nice enough to ride down with Tyler to his workouts. They got to see first hand what kind of workout he gets. On Thursday 3/1, Tyler was riding the stationary bike when he noticed that he was working hard to get his legs to push down on the pedals. So he tried to use his legs to pull up and he noticed his speed increased a lot. Even Eric the trainer said that he was riding a lot faster that way.
Last Saturday, Tyler attended the MPB Varsity Boys basketball game in Newburgh. They beat St Johns for the first time in 4 years to win the "Banner". This is the championship of the regular season. Tyler was asked to give out the trophies to the players and to hand them the big championship trophy. It was a wonderful moment that he will never forget. Thanks Coach Michella for including Tyler in this victory.
Thats all for now. Thank you all for all your help and we will keep the updates coming as new things happen.
